This is a background paper by Sherry for a presentation with Mark E. Ulfers, Head, Frankfurt International School and Paul M. Poore, Director, Harare International School in February 2006 at the annual conference of the Association for the Advancement of International Education in Boston. The article answers key questions about culture and includes data on one school that focused on strengthening its culture. Many of these issues and results are similar to those in other organizations. The paper draws from work on organizational culture developed by Human Synergistics International with their permission. We have used many HSI materials with private sector, nonprofit, and government groups as well as with international schoolsalways with positive results.
